FOUR East Lothian teams have reached the draw for the second round of the Scottish Cup.

Dunbar United, Preston Athletic and Tranent Juniors all booked their spot in the next round of the competition with wins on Saturday, while Haddington Athletic will be looking to join them when they take on Highland League side Deveronvale in a replay.

Victory for the Hi Hi’s would set up a tie at former Scottish Professional Football League side Brechin City, now playing in the same league as Deveronvale.

Dunbar United, who ended Camelon’s cup journey with a 2-0 win, are waiting to find out their opponents as Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale and Edinburgh University drew 2-2, though the Seasiders know they will host a third successive cup tie at New Countess Park.

Preston Athletic’s reward for a 3-0 win over Lossiemouth is a home game against former Junior giants Auchinleck Talbot, while Tranent knocked out Penicuik Athletic to set up an away tie with Broomhill.

Jack Lynch, Preston manager, felt it was a near-flawless performance at Grant Park on Saturday.

He said: “We were really happy.

“It is probably what we would call the perfect away performance going 2-0 up in the first half.

“We completely dominated the game, if I’m honest.

“They were a decent team, very good up front, but once we figured them out I was in no doubt from us scoring the first goal that we would go on to win the tie.”

Preston made the near-200-mile journey north on Friday. Lynch felt that had proven key in their preparations for the contest with the Highland League outfit.

Money had been raised for the club through a charity night, with the cash helping with the costs of the journey to Lossiemouth.

The manager said: “Our preparation for the game was a major part for me as to why we got the result.

“Instead of sitting on a bus for six hours, we stayed in a nice hotel, had breakfast and went for a walk.

“We got to Lossiemouth just after noon and had a little walk about the harbour and the boys were relaxed and ready to go. The preparation was a massive factor.”

Lynch described Auchinleck – 13- time winners of the Scottish Junior Cup – as “the biggest Junior club in Scotland” and said his team would be underdogs.

However, he stressed the cup clash would be pushed to the back of the mind as Preston continue their bid for league glory.

Just four points separate the top seven in Conference B of the East of Scotland Football League.

Preston are two points off leaders Lochore Welfare with two games in hand.

Contests with strugglers Lochgelly Albert, Stirling University reserves and Hawick Royal Albert United offer an opportunity to pick up some more points.

Lynch said: “The Scottish Cup is brilliant and it is a great honour to play in it but my thing this year is I want the club to be promoted. That is my main aim.

“Everything else is a bonus regarding the cups.”

It was a similar story in the only Scottish Cup tie played in East Lothian, where two first-half strikes saw Dunbar comfortably through.

Manager Kevin Haynes felt the victory was “thoroughly deserved” and said: “We had a few chances, particularly towards the end.

“If it had been four it would have been a fairer reflection.

“We had to weather a bit of a storm in the first 20 minutes. They never created many chances but we just started slow.

“Once we got through the first period of the match, we were always in control.”

More than 500 fans packed into New Countess Park for the tie.

Spectators and players alike will have to wait and see who they host in the next round as the two Edinburgh clubs contest their replay this weekend.

Haynes told Courier Sport he had no real preference, with the next round played on October 23.

The manager, who previously played for Dunbar, felt the club was moving in the right direction.

He said: “There is a real sense of community spirit and community backing.

“The best part of the preliminary round [where Dunbar defeated Broxburn Athletic] was the reaction the supporters gave the players when they left the field. It was tenfold on Saturday.

“The excitement of the cup run is generating bodies through the gates. It is magical and long may it continue.”

Meanwhile, Calum Elliot, manager of Premier Division-topping Tranent Juniors, also felt the right team had progressed.

The Belters had to come from a goal down to secure the 3-1 victory at Penicuik but were on top after finding the equaliser.

Elliot said: “I thought after the first 20 or 30 minutes, where we were a bit passive, once we settled we started to dominate play.

“They are a good side and we prepared as best as we could but, as it wore on, we came into it more as it went end to end.”

Tranent knocked out two Lowland League sides, Edinburgh University and East Stirlingshire, in their Scottish Cup debut last campaign and will look to defeat another team from the fifth tier of Scottish football when they face Broomhill, previously known as BSC Glasgow.

Elliot said: “You want to go and compete and do your best.

“We are under no illusions that we are going to a team in the league above. They are in a transition phase with a new manager and players but, having seen them a couple of times, we know they have got a lot of quality.”

Finally, Scott Bonar was full of praise for his Haddington team, who came within seconds of knocking out a Deveronvale side two tiers above them in the footballing pyramid.

A last-minute leveller means both teams need to do it all again at Millfield tomorrow (Saturday).

The manager said: “They can match these teams and it is another game against a team from a level above.

“We have done that with Formartine and BSC Glasgow in the Scottish Cup last year and Dunbar as well.

“It shows they have worked hard and we will keep continuing that and pushing forward.”

Victory would mean a trip to Brechin City, who lost their more-than-60-year status in the SPFL to Kelty Hearts in May, but Bonar said the chance to play them was still “a big incentive”.
