MORE than 100 pupils took to the pool at the Mercat Gait Centre in Prestonpans for the annual East Lothian high schools' swimming competition.

And, for the first year, senior pupils (S4-S6s) had the opportunity to take part alongside S1s-S3s.

Swimmers competed over all strokes, plus the individual medley and mixed relays to win points for their school.

Ross High School - awash with top swimmers from Tranent Amateur Swimming Club - came close to a clean sweep of the prizes, coming out top school in every age group, apart from the S3s, which was won by North Berwick High School.

The Tranent swimmers won the S1-S3 Shield for the fourth year in a row and took home the senior trophy, contested for the first time. Dunbar Grammar School was the only county secondary school not competing.

Karen Ferguson, swimming development officer for organisers enjoyleisure, said: "This is the first time we have managed to include the seniors in the event, meaning we were able to provide 110 children the opportunity to compete throughout the day. The pupils were a credit to their respective schools, with great swimming and sportsmanship on display. And a huge thank you to the volunteers that helped make the event possible."
