CHARLIE McGlynn’s time as chairman of Musselburgh Athletic has come to an end – with Calvin Shand set for a sensational return as manager after standing down less than a fortnight ago.

An extraordinary general meeting (EGM) of the club was called on Monday evening at which it was announced that Mr McGlynn (pictured) would be replaced as chairman, a role he took on in the mid-1990s.

The 70-year-old and wife May, the club’s secretary, have both stepped down with Karl Cleghorn becoming interim chairman; Courier Sport understands Tommy Gallacher will replace Mrs McGlynn as secretary.

An email sent to members of the 1934 Club – Musselburgh Athletic’s supporters’ club – said: “Following the meeting in the Store Club on Monday, May 28, it was agreed that two people would go along and meet with our chairman to discuss club matters.

“It was quite an emotional meeting. We advised them [Mr and Mrs McGlynn] that the ‘body of the people’ wanted an EGM to be arranged with [a] view to forming a new committee to take the club forward.”

Mr Cleghorn told Courier Sport that at a meeting last Wednesday between two 1934 Club representatives and the McGlynns, the club stalwarts both “indicated a willingness to step down”.

The club’s interim chairman, who will be in place until an AGM is held to formally appoint new office-bearers, added: “[At the EGM] genuine concerns for the future of the football club were raised, including non payment of players and staff wages – the club chairman and secretary, although invited, did not attend.

“Therefore a new interim chairman, vice-chairman, secretary, treasurer and seven committee members were duly elected to engage in and carry out the necessary club business until an AGM can be called.”

Mr Cleghorn also confirmed that ex-manager Shand (pictured below), who quit less than a fortnight ago, would return to the Olive Bank dugout ahead of the new season.

Mr McGlynn was unavailable for comment when contacted by Courier Sport on Tuesday.

His successor added: “Further committee meetings are scheduled in order to clarify matters and the financial position of the club.

“The committee has strong backing from the supporters, both financially and a willingness to ensure that next season’s management and team are well supported and the club gets itself in good shape for future seasons.”
