YOUNG golfers from East Lothian and Edinburgh did battle last month, in the same format as the Ryder Cup.

While the world's golfing stars clashed at Hazeltine, East Lothian clinched victory in the third meeting of the county side and a team from the Capital.

That saw the East Lothian side take victory for the first time, after Edinburgh victories at Longniddry Golf Club (2013) and Prestonfield Golf Club (2014).

The match was closely contested, with six of the 12 matches finishing on the final green.

Lauren Lee, who had been five down, fought back superbly to secure an impressive half, which left only Musselburgh GC's Daniel Gaines on the 18th.

He secured the final point to ensure the county side took the title.

A spokesperson for the East Lothian team praised the youngsters' efforts and said: "All the players showed great team spirit on the day and supported their team mates out on the course."

They thanked Jonathan Wallace, of Active Schools Edinburgh, for putting together the opposition, Musselburgh Golf Club for hosting the event, and ClubGolf and the Stephen Gallacher Foundation for their .donations.

The East Lothian team members qualified to represent East Lothian by participating in the East Lothian Secondary School Order of Merit events.
