CRAIGIELAW golf ace Grant Forrest missed out on glory at the Scottish Amateur Open stroke play in the county this week.
Forrest finished tied for the runners-up spot at Gullane Golf Club, four strokes behind Australian Cameron John, who was in excellent form as he picked up the trophy.
The 17-year-old from Melbourne carded a third round 63 to put himself in contention for the title, while a three-under-par 68 on his final round sealed the trophy.
Forrest, the 22-year-old Walker Cup player, had led the field after the opening round, and even held the lead briefly late on, but his final round 70 cost him a chance of victory.
His final round at nearby Gullane saw Forrest card six birdies, an eagle, five bogeys and one double-bogey as he finished 11-under-par.
The 22-year-old had carded rounds of 66 and 69 for a share of the lead at the half-way stage over the weekend, before he fell away.
Australian teenager Cameron set a course record 63 in his third round to take a two-shot lead into the final round, and he continued his good run to finish 15-under-par.
And he admitted watching the county venue on television a year ago, and was delighted to have secured victory.
He said: “I remember watching Rickie Fowler close out his Scottish Open victory here last year with a birdie, so it was great to do the same."
Irishman Stuart Grehan finished tied with Forrest, who beat Peebles' Craig Howie, who finished fourth, to finish as the top-placed Scot.
Forrest's attention now turns to the St Andrews Links Trophy, an event he won two years ago after beating fellow Scot Bradley Neil in a play-off.
