The competition centred around a mystery visit in which every outlet is judged quality of food, atmosphere and customer service.

This year, the pass mark for the takeaway category was the highest it has been in the competition’s seven-year history with the cut-off point being 97%, leaving little room for error.

Reece Head, competition organiser, said: “This year’s results were the tightest they’ve ever been, showing that standards in the fish and chip industry are increasing all the time.

“These operators have proved they are at the top of their game, subjecting their premises, staff and food to a thorough inspection and coming out with near-on perfect results.

“We would like to congratulate each and everyone and wish them a successful year as they enjoy their status as one of the best fish and chip operators in the UK.”
