PLANS to change a former Tranent bank into a church have been approved by East Lothian Council.

The building, located on 36 High Street, Tranent, was previously home to a Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) branch before it closed in July last year.

The RBS was the final bank in the town, with Musselburgh’s Bridge Street now home to the nearest RBS branch for Tranent residents.

The proposal to change the building into a place of worship was submitted in July by Tim Rawlinson, who serves as a minister at Musselburgh Baptist Church, and the plans have now been approved by the local authority's planning department.

The planning officer said that the alterations would “bring a significant footfall to the High Street".

They suggested that the new church would “strengthen the vibrancy of the area and enhance the character of the Tranent Conservation Area.”

No external alterations will be made to the building, and no objections were raised regarding impact on road safety and the road network or potential loss of amenity.
