THE actions of a steward and Police Scotland have been commended after a car appeared to drive towards a Scottish independence march in Glasgow.

The Believe in Scotland and Pensioners for Independence rally, held on Saturday, brought together Yes supporters from across Scotland to march from Kelvingrove Park to the city’s George Square.

A video shared on social media appears to show a silver car driving towards marchers on West Regent Street. A Believe in Scotland volunteer steward alongside a Police Scotland officer are seen to stop the car and force it to reverse.

SNP MP for Glasgow Central Alison Thewliss reacted to the footage, writing on Twitter/X: “A very worrying incident - well done to the steward and the quick-thinking police officer for their actions.”

Christina McKelvie, SNP MSP for Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse wrote: “Quick reaction of the police officer saved people from serious injury! Well done @PoliceScotland”.

SNP MP Stewart McDonald said: "I was there as this car tried to drive into the march. The police officer who jumped in to stop the driver was an absolute hero, dealing with the idiot driver with bravery and professionalism. A credit to Police Scotland."

One social media user said: “Well done to those officers.”

Another added: “Bloody hell, so glad nobody was hurt,” while one person wrote: “Police don't always get the praise they deserve. But this is brave and tremendous work here.”
