HUNDREDS of East Lothian residents will be lacing up their running shoes as the Edinburgh Marathon Festival returns to the county today (Sunday).

The event, established for more than 20 years, will be started by Archie Hamilton, a Haddington teenager battling cancer.

The half marathon is already under way with the full marathon starting at 10am.

The route covers much of central and east Edinburgh and the coastal west of East Lothian.

Significant road closures and restrictions will be in place, particularly in and around Musselburgh, where the race ends.

The full marathon starts from Potterrow, Edinburgh, and runners make their way to Portobello and Musselburgh before continuing east through Prestonpans, Cockenzie and Port Seton, Longniddry and finally towards Gosford Estate, before an about-turn to the finish line at Pinkie St Peter’s Primary School playing fields.

Entrants have been reminded by organisers to show respect to the local area as “the continuing success of the event depends upon the support of the local community”.

Organisers stressed that runners should not park or drive in Musselburgh or the surrounding area as there have been blocked bus routes and residents’ driveways in the past.

Vehicles obstructing resident access may be towed away.

Residents should be aware that streets including Musselburgh High Street and Prestonpans High Street, along with parts of the coast road between Cockenzie and Port Seton and Gosford Estate, will be closed for much of Sunday.

Numerous neighbouring streets will also have temporary suspensions on parking which residents should be aware of prior to the event.
