An Ormiston man who assaulted his partner and flouted court orders to stay away from the woman has avoided jail.

Steven Denholm, 42, engaged in a course of conduct that was abusive of his partner by repeatedly striking her to the head and body during several violent incidents in 2021.

Denholm also knocked the woman to the ground and repeatedly kicked her to the head at Artillery Park, Haddington.

He admitted his guilt, to a heavily amended charge, when he appeared at the capital’s sheriff court last month and was back in the dock for sentencing last Thursday.

He also pleaded guilty to breaching bail conditions on four occasions by entering the street and being in the company of the woman when he had been ordered not to as part of his bail conditions. Sheriff Kenneth Campbell sentenced Denholm, of Sprinty Drive, Ormiston, to a community-based disposal whereby he will be under the supervision of the local social work department for the next 15 months.

Denholm will also have to complete 150 hours of unpaid work and was handed a non-harassment order, meaning he cannot approach or contact the woman for the next five years.

Denholm admitted engaging in a course of conduct that was abusive of his partner at Artillery Park, Haddington, between September 24 and 25, 2021.

He also pleaded guilty to breaching bail conditions not to enter Artillery Park or contact the woman on December 2, 2021 and February 11 and March 13, both last year.
