A HOLYROOD motion congratulating Prestonpans resident Harry Cairney on his retirement from the role of president of Scotmid Co-operative has been supported by South Scotland MSP Martin Whitfield.

The motion, tabled by fellow South Scotland and Scottish Labour MSP Colin Smyth, noted Mr Cairney’s long service, which began in 1987 when he became a director of the Prestonpans Co-operative Society, before serving as a board member of Scotmid Co-operative from 1998, becoming vice-president in 2009, and president in 2014.

The motion also covered his service to the wider co-operative movement and commitment to co-operative values and principles, which included his work to promote the Fair Tax Mark.

Mr Cairney has been a key figure in Prestonpans Labour Club and the local Labour Party for many years, and supported many local good causes.

Mr Whitfield said: “Harry has been a hugely influential figure in Scotmid and the wider co-operative movement for decades and his service to it is very worthy of recognition and congratulation.

“He has also been a provider of sage advice to various local and national politicians, including myself, over many years.

“I was very pleased to support Colin’s motion congratulating Harry on his significant contribution and acknowledging his retirement and wish him all the very best for the future.”
