VOLUNTEERS from North Berwick’s RNLI lifeboat station are climbing North Berwick Law every day this month to raise money for the charity.

The Mayday Mile is an event organised by the RNLI to encourage people to walk, run, skip or cycle a mile every day of the month to help fund training and equipment for volunteers.

The volunteers plan to cover more than three miles a day, from the lifeboat station to the summit of the 187m-high Law and back again.

Laura Anderson, chair of the North Berwick and Gullane RNLI Fundraising Branch, said: “The Mayday Mile is a great way to get out and enjoy the spring whilst helping to raise vital lifesaving funds.

“In 2021, it cost £1,400 to train a crew member in the vital skills which allowed them to save 506 lives across the UK and Ireland in 2022, so you know your money is having an impact.”

A view of North Berwick Law from the lifeboat station was captured by Jack Lowe, a travelling photographer with the mission of capturing all 238 RNLI lifeboat stations with his Victorian-era camera back in 2019.

Jack said: “When I make the crew portraits, I always try and incorporate as much context as possible so that anybody seeing the photograph can immediately place it.

“One of the first things that struck me when I arrived at North Berwick RNLI was how the lifeboat station buildings are nestled within the town – they’re part of the fabric.”

Limited edition prints of Jack’s work are available on his Lifeboat Station Project website.
