A FUNDRAISER which collected more than £60,000 in its first year has received a financial boost.

Dunbar held a Relay for Life in aid of Cancer Research UK last summer for the first time.

The event is centred on a 24-hour relay in which team members take turns to walk round a track day and night.

The purpose of the fundraiser is to symbolise that while cancer never sleeps, by acting together, we can make a stand against it.

Community Windpower Limited donated £1,000 to cover the cost of the Candle of Hope ceremony, where everyone is invited to dedicate a candle to someone no longer with us, a friend or family member living with cancer, a loved one who has survived, or hope for the future, last year.

Now, the group has come forward again with a donation to back the event at Hallhill Sports Centre.

Anouska Woods, community coordinator at BeGreen Dunbar, said £4,500 would be donated.

She said: “We are incredibly proud to be a main sponsor of this year’s Relay for Life Dunbar.

“What an inspiring event, helping to fund such important work in the fight against cancer. We wish that everyone involved has an amazing day.”

The funding will be used to fund key costs associated with the event including equipment hire, licences, first aid cover, medals and the Candle of Hope ceremony.

This year’s event takes place on June 24-25. Already, more than a dozen teams have signed up for the event, with more than £3,000 already raised.
