A COUNTY family is mourning the loss of a much-loved mum and grandmum, who died on Friday, aged 42, after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer just six weeks ago.

They said they have been “robbed of the rock of the family” after Jane Turner, of North Grange Avenue, Prestonpans, passed away.

Jane, a mum-of-five, worked part-time in the shop at Seton Sands Holiday Park for five years.

Her eldest son Ryan’s partner Amy Hunter said that they were “truly devastated” as Jane became more ill before their eyes.

“Jane worked right up until six weeks ago when she started having a sore back and the pain was too much so she needed to take time off,” said Amy.

Jane was then diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, which spread quickly to other parts of her body.

'Shattered our world'

“Six weeks ago they thought it was a bad gallbladder but further tests revealed it was cancer and the more scans and tests they did, the worse it became,” Amy added.

“She became so weak that the chemotherapy they were hoping to give her to slow it down was denied due to her being so ill.”

Jane passed away at home on Friday at 7.30pm, surrounded by her family.

Amy said: “This has shattered our world. To lose someone so fast in a short space of time, we never had time to plan doing things with Jane or having time with her because she became so ill so fast.”

She paid tribute to the support which the family had received from relatives, friends and members of the community.

“We just want to thank them all,” said Amy, who launched a GoFundMe appeal to support the family with the cost of bills, including funeral costs.

Jane and husband David, also 42, have five sons – Ryan, 26, Jay, 22, Aiden, 15, and five-year-old twins Jack and Carter, who are pupils at St Gabriel’s RC Primary School in Prestonpans. Carter has cerebral palsy. Jane’s mum Catherine McShane also stays with the family.

Amy said: “Ryan is signed off from work with stress and currently not receiving any pay. We have three kids: Liam, 11, Leah, aged seven, and Jacob, 10 months.”

The couple live in the Pinkie area of Musselburgh, although Amy is originally from Prestonpans. Liam and Leah are pupils at Pinkie St Peter’s Primary School.

Amy said: “Jane was massively liked and loved by the community of Prestonpans. She lived for her boys and made sure they never missed out on anything, from making sure birthdays and Christmas were big to parties and days out.

“She always made sure she was at every school event, showing her support and lending a hand to anyone that needed it.

“When I met Ryan, I already had two children and she took them on as her own grandchildren, spoiling them and showing them love. When Jacob came along, he was loved and spoiled so much by her but she treated them all the same.”

There is no date for the funeral but it is expected to take place at Prestonpans Cemetery, where everyone will be welcome.
