MORE than £1.3 million has been earmarked for investment in parks across East Lothian.

The Scottish Government and CoSLA – the umbrella organisation for local authorities across the country – have outlined funding for the next five years.

Money will be used to refurbish children’s play parks.

In East Lothian, £108,000 has been identified for both 2021/22 and 2022/23.

The figure will then increase over the following three years – £218,000 (2023/24), £327,000 (2024/25) and £545,000 (2025/26).

Clare Haughey MSP, Children’s Minister, welcomed the funding, which will be spread across Scotland.

She said: “Playing outdoors has huge benefits for children’s physical and mental wellbeing, and play parks ensure that children can access high-quality safe environments free of charge as families grapple with the cost-of-living crisis.

“This funding will support local communities to take forward their plans to improve play parks for children in their area.”

A spokesperson for East Lothian Council welcomed the cash boost.

They said: “The council is using the Scottish Government monies along with its own Capital Plan funds to replace and renew a range of play areas across the county.

“The funding is welcome and supports and enhances the council’s own commitments.”

Paul McLennan, East Lothian’s MSP, welcomed the funding announcement.

He said: “This funding will be a huge support for East Lothian Council as they take forward their plans to improve play parks.”
