Progress on the new cemetery in Prestonpans is continuing as the next stage in its development gets under way “imminently”.
The public burial ground will be located on a plot of land just south of the B1361, opposite the west end of the Royal Musselburgh Golf Club and bordering the new houses on Moodie Wynd.
Concerns have been shared that the existing cemetery is almost at capacity, with the increasing population across Preston Seton Gosford meaning that a new one was required.
Plans were first announced in 2019 but little progress had been made until now.
East Lothian Council officials confirmed that the next stage of the development, an internal roadway, was going out to tender shortly.
The council also confirmed it was currently working on the infrastructure to provide for new burials but was unable to give a timescale for completion.
An East Lothian Council spokesperson said: “The council is bringing forward the approved site for a new cemetery in Prestonpans and currently working on the infrastructure to provide for burials.”
