KINSHIP carers are being urged to check if they could be entitled to further support.

Paul McLennan, East Lothian MSP, made the call last week at the start of Scottish Kinship Care Week, which celebrates the role of family or friends caring for children who cannot remain with their birth parents.

Mr McLennan has encouraged kinship carers to check their eligibility for the Scottish Child Payment.

The former East Lothian Council leader described the role kinship carers play as “invaluable”.

He said: “Last year, in line with the Scottish Government’s commitment to end child poverty, the Scottish Child Payment was increased to £25 per week per eligible child and expanded the criteria to include more kinship carers.

“I want to ensure everyone gets the financial support they are entitled to, so I’d encourage carers to check whether they’re entitled to receive the Scottish Child Payment and any other Scottish Government benefits.”
