THOSE wishing to have their say regarding the proposed closure of Johnnie Cope’s Road have until tomorrow (Friday) to do so.

The proposed closure of the road, which connects Prestonpans and Tranent over the A1, was presented in late 2022 by East Lothian Council, with a statutory and public consultation taking place in the new year.

The proposals would see the road closed to all motor vehicles except emergency vehicles and resident access, and the creation of a new active travel route for cyclists and pedestrians.

However, the plan has garnered criticism from local groups such as Prestonpans Community Council, which described it as “absurd” while also claiming the local authority had “moved the goalposts” midway through the consultation process.

A public campaign group has been set up, with more than 1,200 members protesting the council’s intention to close the road. It has since issued leaflets and put up banners to keep the proposals in the public eye.

The five-week consultation period ends tomorrow; those wishing to give their thoughts or object can email legal@eastlothian.gov.uk
