The price of getting fit at the county's sports centres and pools is to rise next month.

The cost of a monthly Fitness Plus membership - which gives unlimited access to seven gyms, six swimming pools and hundreds of fitness classes across East Lothian - is increasing from £35.50 to £37 from April 1 for 18-59 year olds.

Bosses at enjoyleisure, the not-for-profit charitable trust which the facilities on behalf of East Lothian Council, have stressed that the increase for adults is "significantly less than the current rate of inflation".

In an email today to enjoyleisure membership holders, the organisation's general manager, Bill Axon, said: “As you may be aware, this is a challenging time for charities and local services.

"Rising energy costs, inflation and lack of financial support during the pandemic have all contributed to this challenge.

“Despite this, we believe it is important, to support the physical health and wellbeing of our local communities.

“For this reason, our board of directors agreed only a slight increase to be applied to our fitness membership packages to come into effect as of April 1, 2023.”

Enjoyleisure says that "every penny" it makes is reinvested back into its facilities for the benefit of its customers.

Membership fees contribute to supporting coached activity programmes for local children; providing accessible facilities and activities for individuals with additional support needs; supporting access to sports facilities for low income families; and providing training and employment opportunities for young people seeking careers in East Lothian.

Adjustments to the monthly direct debit payments will be applied automatically.

Enjoyleisure has been asked by the Courier what other changes have been made to its charging structure.
