A group of swimmers from Longniddry will take to the chilly waters of the Forth tomorrow to celebrate International Women’s Day.

Kate King founded Longniddry Sea Swimmers in 2022, alongside her partner, with the group getting together every Sunday for a dip off Longniddry.

Kate, who owns snack van the Picnic Box in Longniddry, said she started the swimming group after noticing a number of people in the area swimming in the Forth.

She said: “I had seen people swimming down by the sea and thought it would be good to have a group dedicated to sea swimming that could bring people together and encourage them to get involved.

“It just took off from there and now we meet every Sunday at 10.30am.”

The swim on Wednesday starts at 6.30am at Longniddry Bents Car Park No. 2 with everyone welcome to come along and take part.

There is no fee for taking part.

Kate said: “We wanted to do something to mark International Women's Day and we thought doing something like this was the perfect thing to do.

“There are similar events to this in places like Portobello, but nothing in East Lothian so we thought why not give it a go.

“In terms of International Women's Day, it’s all about women empowering women to come together and get in the water.

“If we can encourage women to get involved then that is what we aim to do.”

The group normally attracts between 12 and 15 swimmers each Sunday and Kate said this number continued to increase.

She said: “We are hoping for a good turnout on the day. We chose a 6.30am start because, while it is really early, parents can come before they need to start getting kids ready for school or before going to work. So hopefully we get a good turnout.”
