A PETITION with almost 200 signatures has not been enough to stop plans for a new restaurant and takeaway being given the go ahead.

Changes will be made to the former Ladbrokes bookmakers on Prestonpans’ Hawthorn Road.

Mr Murad’s plans were approved, despite East Lothian Council’s planning department receiving a petition in opposition to the proposals.

The planning officer’s report noted the town’s community council had made no comment about the application.

However, there were three letters of objection.

The report reads: “One of the objections is a pro-forma representation composed of a petition containing 186 individual signatures.

“The main grounds of objection are: impact of cooking odours, food waste storage and noise on neighbouring properties; increased litter; young people congregating in the vicinity of a neighbouring public house; and no requirement for additional hot food takeaway at this location.”

The planning officer said there being “no requirement” for a takeaway was not relevant to determining the application and litter and young people gathering could be controlled under other legislation.

Drawings included with the application show seating for 22 people, as well as a waiting area for takeaway collection.

A kitchen would be created to the rear of the premises, although there is no indication as to what type of cuisine would be on the menu.
