PEOPLE interested in becoming lifeguards are being supported to take the plunge through a £1,000 grant.

enjoyleisure and EDF, which manages Torness Power Station, have teamed up to help future leisure assistants gain the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ).

EDF has created a bursary which will provide a helping hand for future employees who might not otherwise be able to afford to put themselves through the qualification.

The funding will allow enjoyleisure to offer four opportunities on the training course – the most awarded lifeguard qualification in the UK. The NPLQ course trains and qualifies participants in essential life-saving pool rescue techniques, including lifeguarding theory, first aid and CPR.

Bill Axon, chief executive of enjoyleisure, said: “A career within the leisure industry is attractive to many school leavers; however, one of the minimum requirements for entry level positions is the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification.

“For many, course fees can be a barrier to them getting the job they want.

“The funding provided by Torness Power Station allows enjoyleisure to support candidates to gain this qualification.

“Furthermore, enjoyleisure will be identifying, mentoring and training the candidates through their NPLQ certification, providing them with a significant boost to launching their career in leisure.”

enjoyleisure, which manages five swimming pools across the county in Dunbar, North Berwick, Haddington, Tranent and Musselburgh, is currently recruiting for leisure assistants to work across its centres.

Jamie McKenzie, acting Torness station director, said: “This valuable scheme has great benefits, not just for the young people training, but also for those looking to go and safely enjoy the area’s leisure facilities.

“I wish those who are awarded the bursary all the very best for their future careers in the industry.”
