THE archaeology and garden development at historic Newhailes estate at Musselburgh will be shared this month and in March.

Archaeologist Dr Daniel Rhodes gives a talk and tour of the 18th-century Newhailes landscape which encapsulates the philosophical and artistic ideas of the Scottish Enlightenment. It reflects the aspirations and ideals of the Dalrymple family and the class divisions of the 18th and 19th centuries. His talk is on Saturday, 2-4pm.

Colin Wren, gardens and designed landscape manager for National Trust for Scotland Edinburgh & East, gives a talk on March 4, 2.30-3.30pm.

He will give an overview of the garden through time, highlighting how it has evolved and, at the same time, retained many of its original features.

He will use maps and period documents to illustrate an understanding of the various stages of development and how they might be used to inform any future management of the site.

Dogs are not permitted at the events.
