AN IMPRESSIVE dome-like structure has appeared in the grounds of a busy sports centre.

The purple and white structure was put in place at Hallhill by Team East Lothian Athletics Club.

It is hoped it will be used as a strength and conditioning facility for the county's top athletes ahead of a permanent structure being created at Meadowmill.

A retrospective planning application has been submitted to East Lothian Council’s planning department.

Documents included with the application note the function of the proposed purple and white facility.

It reads: “Proposed temporary strength and conditioning training facility, created by two 40-foot shipping containers spaced 10m apart with a canopy over the central space to form a covered outdoor area.

“The containers themselves will house weights and fitness machines.

“The facility will be used primarily by local sports clubs for sheltered outdoor training due to the complete lack of availability of such in the county.”

It is anticipated that the facility could be in place for up to two years.

During that time, it is hoped there will be discussions with East Lothian Council regarding a community asset transfer of land at Meadowmill, between Tranent and Prestonpans.

That would then allow for the construction of a new full indoor training facility beside the existing East Lothian Athletics Arena.

The application notes discussions are ongoing and are “taking much longer than anticipated”.
