The RNLI has released video footage of them making a daring rescue of a dog that had become trapped on a rock near the old Cockenzie Power Station last month.

The crew from Kinghorn arrived on the scene at about 3.20pm and quickly located the animal, which had clambered onto a rock beneath the jetty.

In the video, members of the crew are seen approaching the scared Labrador and encouraging it to come onto the lifeboat.

Callie, the Red Fox Labrador, had fallen about three metres from the adjacent sea wall, sustaining a slight paw injury.

She was retrieved safely and then reunited with her worried owners.

A spokesperson for the RNLI, who were joined by Coastguard from Fisherrow, said: "The volunteer lifeboat crew were called out to the rescue near the former Cockenzie Power Station in East Lothian, Scotland just before 3pm on Friday, January 20.

"Once on scene, the lifeboat crew had to carefully manoeuvre the boat below the jetty, requiring precision boat handling.

"Callie was incredibly scared and nervous but was soon pulled to safety onboard the Atlantic 85 lifeboat with the crew.

"Despite her fall, the dog only had an injured paw and was safely reunited with her worried owner at Cockenzie Harbour, alongside Fisherrow Coastguard."

The RNLI stressed how important it is to keep your dog safe when visiting the coast, stressing that owners should always take certain precautions to protect their pet.

The spokesperson added: "Keep dogs on a lead if you're close to cliff edges or fast flowing rivers.

"If your dog enters the water or gets stuck in the mud, don't go in after them.

"If possible, move to a place where they can get to safely and call for them. They will likely get out by themselves.

"If you're worried about your dog, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard."
