THREE East Lothian schools have been recognised for their LGBT inclusion work by being presented with Silver Charters from LGBT Youth Scotland.

Dunbar Grammar School, Knox Academy in Haddington, and Ross High School in Tranent have been recognised through the LGBT Charter, a programme that enables schools to proactively include LGBT people in their work and aims to protect staff and provide a high-quality service to students.

The programme has been developed to support schools to undertake training and review policies, practice and resources to make sure that schools are as inclusive as possible.

The LGBT Charter makes a statement that equality and diversity are at the heart of a school.

David Russell-Fitzgerald, principal teacher of guidance at Ross High School, said: “We are exceptionally proud to achieve our LGBT Silver Charter at Ross High School.

“This was very much a team effort, from the group of staff and pupils who directly planned and supported with the significant amount of work that went on, to the rest of the school who got involved and ensured that life for young LGBTQI+ pupils was made even a little bit easier.

“The support from Ann Marriott at LGBT Youth Scotland was fantastic and I can quite honestly say that I could not have led on this so successfully without her ongoing support and kind advice.

“The ongoing fight to ensure that the LGBTQI+ community is free from discrimination goes on and the Silver Charter is a major part of that journey.”
