TRANENT Juniors were narrowly beaten away to Celtic B on Saturday in what could prove a huge game in the race for the Lowland League title.

Tranent Juniors went into the game on the back of two successive wins against East Stirlingshire and Caledonian Braves while Celtic B were hoping to bounce back after a defeat to Gala Fairydean Rovers.

Celtic B started the game on the front foot but Tranent were able to weather the storm in the first half limiting chances for the hosts.

Celtic’s Joey Dawson thought he had put his side in front on the half-hour mark but the referee ruled the goal out for handball.

Tranent did well to block another Dawson effort at the end of the first half to ensure the scores remained level.

Tranent started the second half brighter with Aidan Walsh firing narrowly over the bar.

Dawson looked a constant threat for Celtic B and finally got his reward on 62 minutes when he found the net.

Celtic B continued to press and doubled their advantage with 15 minutes to go when Ben Quinn put the ball in the net after some clever build up play.

Despite the set back, Tranent never looked out of the game and fired themselves right back into the contest on 79 minutes.

There were several people claiming for the goal with Daryl Healy taking credit for the finish.

Despite a late push for an equaliser, Tranent were unable to find the net for a second time and the points remained with the Glasgow youngsters.

Celtic B went top of the table with the win putting them on 51 points alongside rivals Rangers B, also on 51 points.

Tranent chase them in third place and also sit on 51 points but with a worse gaol difference than both Glasgow sides and having played two games more than their rivals.

A home fixture against Gretna 2008 awaits on Saturday. The visitors sit 15th in the table and have enjoyed a mixed set of results in recent weeks.

They beat East Stirlingshire 2-0 at home on Saturday.

Elsewhere in the county, all other games were called off due to the bad weather with rearranged fixtures yet to be scheduled.
