A family-run electrical appliance business in operation in Tranent for almost a century has closed its doors as it relocates to Prestonpans.

Bisset and Steedman was founded in 1932 and is a fourth-generation firms which has been on Tranent's High Street for 90 years.

It announced in June 2022 that it would be relocating to Prestonpans due to “constraints on customer accessibility to the shop” through a lack of parking areas.

The business is relocating to Mid Road Industrial Estate, Prestonpans, with work well underway to get the premises open.

In a post on Facebook, the business said: “As one door closes, another one opens.

“Today we pulled the shutters down on Tranent High Street for the final time after 90 years of trading.

“We would like to say an enormous thanks to all of our customers over the years who have bought everything from bicycles, washing machines and stereos to TVs, Hoovers and kitchens.

“We cannot wait to welcome you into our new appliance centre and kitchen showroom in the coming weeks.”

Mike Falconer, chair of Tranent and Elphinstone Community Council, said: “It is the end of an era for the business and we are sad to see them go.

“They have been a huge part of Tranent for so many years and they will be missed.

“They are just moving down the road though so we know they won’t be too far away.

“I’d like to wish them the best of luck in their new premises.”

The business remains open remotely while work to move into new premises continues.
