Discoloured water that has been coming from the taps across Prestonpans may be the result of repairs to a burst water main that took place yesterday.

Scottish Water confirmed that it had received a number of reports from residents who were experiencing discolouration from taps in their homes.

The cause of the discolouration remains unknown, but officials at Scottish Water stated that it may be as a result of main repair works that "disturbed some sediment".

However, numerous other incidents may cause such discolouration such as nearby roadworks or third parties using hydrants.

Residents experiencing discolouration have been advised to run their taps until the water becomes clear again.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “Scottish Water have received a small number of reports of discoloured water in Prestonpans today.

"Discoloured water can be due to a number of reasons including burst pipes on the network, nearby roadworks or third parties using hydrants.

"Our teams repaired a burst water main in the area last night which may have disturbed some sediment in the pipe.

"Customers experiencing discoloured water are advised to run their kitchen taps until the water runs clear again.”
