The co-ordinator of Carberry Neighbourhood Watch has urged East Lothian Council to reduce the speed limit and clean mud off what he claims is an increasingly dangerous road in the village.

The A6124, which passes through the village and used to be a 60mph road but was recently changed to a temporary 40mph limit, sees cars continue to speed “at 80 or 90mph down the hill”, it was claimed.

HGV lorries and farm tractors use the route, meaning the surface is, say residents, often covered in mud deposits.

Nigel Green, co-ordinator of Carberry Neighbourhood Watch, has raised the issue with East Lothian Council officials but the problem is yet to be rectified and he worries that a serious accident could occur.

He said: “Concern of a serious accident has been raised several times with East Lothian Council along this dangerous stretch of road, but little gets done to clear the road of significant mud deposits across the carriageway caused by high-volume HGV traffic transiting to Hamilton Waste and farm tractors.”

He claimed it was the “muddiest” road in the county and the council “continually fail to address our concerns”.

Police placed a cut-out officer on the route, which Mr Green said was working to reduce speeding until it was stolen.

A council spokesperson said: “Road safety is a clear priority for East Lothian Council and we recognise that the speed of vehicles is a subject that can be of concern to local communities.

“The enforcement of speed restrictions is a matter for Police Scotland and concerns can be raised through their non-emergency 101 line or online via their reporting form.

“We would be happy to engage with Carberry Neighbourhood Watch to discuss the issues raised.”
