A GROWING community could soon be home to two new sports pitches.

The grass pitches are planned for land beside the new Wallyford Primary School on the village’s Futures Way.

Currently, the former agricultural land is unused.

Plans from East Lothian Council have been lodged with the council’s planning department and a design statement highlights various technical details for the site, including the height of fencing and the drainage strategy.

Floodlighting would also be included at the site.

It describes the two pitches as being capable of “supporting two full-size adult rugby pitches” and with an overall footprint of 130m x 80m.

A spokeswoman for East Lothian Council could not give an indication on when the pitches would be in place.

She said: “All we can say on this at the moment is we hope to take a decision on this before the deadline of February 12, 2023.”

The latest proposals come on the heels of plans for a near-£1 million sports pavilion at the site.

Those plans, also from the council, show a single-storey sports changing pavilion, capable of accommodating up to four teams.

The council has already allocated £950,000 in its capital plan for the venue, which would also include a clubroom.

Then, a council spokeswoman said: “The grass pitches will take time to establish and it is anticipated that they will be able to be used from 2024 onwards.

“Subject to planning permission, construction of the pavilion will be co-ordinated so that the facility is available once the pitches are established.

“This means we expect contracts to be awarded in spring 2023 for completion in spring 2024.

“We are pleased to progress to planning permission for this project.

“Our aim is to create high-quality sports pitches and a changing pavilion for the Wallyford area to benefit the community as part of our approved masterplan of the area.”
