VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help make people’s Christmas special across East Lothian by delivering essential food packages to those in need.

Deliveries of food are needed from Macmerry Village Hall tomorrow (Friday) and on December 30, at 10.30am on both days; and from Aldi in Tranent on Saturday at 6pm.

Deliveries will include Jingle Bags packages from East Lothian Foodbank, deliveries from Cash for Kids, Aldi supplies and New Year supplies.

Those who want to volunteer should bring their own vehicle on the day.

Mike Falconer, chair of both Radio Saltire and Tranent and Elphinstone Community Council, is organising drivers and those interested should contact him directly.

Mike said: “The response so far has been outstanding.

“We’ve had over 20 people so far get in touch offering to help, which is fantastic!

“The more that can come along the merrier because it means the workload can be split up evenly and make the deliveries a lot easier.

“I love doing this every year and, although I wish we didn’t have to do it, it is a great bit of community work for people to get involved in.

“We always get a great response from people too, who often dress up in Christmas costumes, and we all have a great time delivering things.

“The people of East Lothian are fantastic and I’d encourage anyone who can spare an hour or two on any of the dates to get in touch.”

Elaine Morrison, manager at East Lothian Foodbank, added: “We are so grateful to the many volunteers who help us deliver food all year round and to those who step in at Christmas to support us.

“Without the hard-working volunteer groups like ours, we could not operate, and we are so grateful to people for their support.

“East Lothian is one of the most generous places I have seen and it feels like a real community here.

“The way people help each other here is incredible.

“Maybe this happens in every community but to me it feels special here.”
