‘Blizzard Bear’, ‘Snow Connery’, ‘Polar Patroller’ and ‘Salty’ are just some of the gritters that have been gritting the A1 through East Lothian over the last few days

As bad weather continues to hit the county the creatively named gritters from BEAR Scotland have been out in their numbers to clear roads through the county.

East Lothian Police took to social media to share their amusement at the names of saying: “Scotland wins again: laughing at the names of our gritters is the only good part of bad weather. Why does no one else have fun with theirs?

Meanwhile the council has used more than 1,200 tonnes of salt on roads and pavements since last Wednesday and continue to work on roads in the county as snow is expected tomorrow.

Due to the volume of roads needing work the council has had to adopt a priority system for which roads get treated first with salt.

The primary salting road network is made up of the major routes where the majority of vehicle movements take place and also includes accesses to hospitals, ambulance stations, fire stations, other emergency service establishments, railway stations and schools.

Secondary routes include other classified routes and connecting routes between town centres, and accesses to residential areas.

And minor routes include crossroads and connecting roads, accesses into industrial and residential areas, residential areas, cul-de-sacs and other unclassified roads.
