A ROAD connecting Dunbar to the A1 could be closed for more than five years as hundreds of homes are built in the town.

Nearly 250 homes at Hallhill North were given the go-ahead by councillors in December last year; work is expected to start in the New Year.

Taylor Wimpey East Scotland – which is behind the proposals for 197 houses and 48 flats – has been granted a temporary traffic regulation order (TTRO).

The order is for the road connecting Beveridge Row, Eweford and Lochend Kennels and will see the road closed to allow construction traffic.

It closes from Monday and is scheduled to reopen at the end of April 2024.

However, a spokesperson for Taylor Wimpey East Scotland highlighted it could be closed for longer.

'Five to six years to complete'

They said: “Depending on our build rate, we expect this development to take around five to six years to complete and it is likely that this road closure would be in place for this period of time.

“We sought a road closure to limit the amount of construction vehicles using the existing roads at Yosemite Park/Brodie Road; however, we would like to take this opportunity to advise the local community to please note that construction vehicles will still require access to these roads throughout the duration of our build.”

Jacquie Bell, secretary of Dunbar Community Council, was concerned at the short notice of the closure.

She highlighted that a number of youngsters would use the road on their way to Dunbar Grammar School, while many people used the route to head from the A1 towards Belhaven Bay.

Mrs Bell was also concerned that more large vehicles could pass through West Barns.
