A RUGBY club with a fine tradition of players reaching the top has recognised the efforts of another talented young player.

North Berwick has produced a number of players who have gone on to play for Edinburgh, Glasgow Warriors and Scotland in recent years.

The club’s under-18s squad recognised a team-mate through the Players’ Player of the Year Trophy.

Youngsters from the squad selected Oliver Bonnington as the Player of the Season.

David Sibbald, coach of the side, congratulated the youngster and said: “Oliver is a team player and very well liked within the squad.

“I think he is one of the highest points scorers in the team and he is just an all-round nice guy.”

In recent years, the club has helped the careers of a number of talented rugby players.

Liz Musgrove and Megan Gaffney are currently with the Scotland squad at the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand while Scotland cap Annabel Sergeant also came through the ranks in North Berwick.

Meanwhile, Chris Dean, Cameron Hutchison and Ben Muncaster all started their journey with the club and are now at Edinburgh Rugby.

Scotland cap Rory Darge, who is currently sidelined at Glasgow Warriors with a serious ankle injury, and Scotland sevens star Harvey Elms also came through the youth system.

The award is sponsored by The Castle Inn in Dirleton and Mr Sibbald said: “There is a very strong tradition in North Berwick itself in developing these players.”
