THE crane-out of boats at Fisherrow Harbour in Musselburgh reached a record last week with the most ever vessels involved in the annual operation.

A total of 32 boats were removed from the harbour and are now in dry dock for winter maintenance.

Stuart Rillie, harbour manager, said: "Thirty-two boats were lifted out which is the most ever lifted out, but, with more boats in the harbour than ever before, it was expected that more would apply to crane out."

He explained: "The wind forecast for the day was touch and go, but, due to other work commitments from the 'crane gang,' it was going to be difficult to arrange another suitable later date.

"So we took the decision to go ahead and hoped the wind wasn't as bad as forecast.

"We are also limited due to tidal constraints as to when we can lift the boats out.

"However, the crane turned up at 6am and we lifted the first boat at 7am.

"Apart from a few small gusts the wind stayed down."

A tea break was enjoyed with hot rolls and tea/coffee supplied by Sizzlers and home baked cakes and treats supplied by Zac Jones, the new owner of the yacht Scarab and his mum Hannah.

Mr Rillie said: "We landed the last boat at 12.35pm, so another record time thanks to the efficiency and hard work from the 'crane gang' and a brilliant crane driver.

"The winter months will see many boats have routine maintenance carried out and scrubbed up ready for the summer sailing season."

The boats are set to be craned back into the harbour in late March 2023.
