PLOUGHED fields, the ribbed pattern left by the tide and other sights throughout East Lothian are the inspiration for a new art exhibition by a former county school teacher.

Sheila Calder, who taught art and design at North Berwick High School, has lived in East Lothian for more than 30 years and is still inspired by her surroundings.

Textures of the Countryside and Beach opened at The Loft in Haddington last Tuesday.

Sheila, who lives south of Gifford, said: “I have beachcombed obsessively since I was old enough to walk, having been lucky to have a beach right at the bottom of my garden.

“Decades later, I am still absorbed by what I find washed up by the tide, although sadly there is much more plastic than wood to be gleaned from our beaches now.”

The exhibition runs until Christmas and the artist, who is originally from the Isle of Bute, added: “I’m intending to refresh some of the pieces seasonally.

“There will be some more late autumn and winter pieces replacing the more summery ones.”
