A married couple from Prestonpans recorded a unique achievement by winning both the men’s and ladies’ championship singles bowls tournaments at their club.

George and Mags Thomson, of Polwarth Terrace, have been members of the town’s Castlepark Bowling Club for decades, with George joining in 1985 and Mags in 1988.

Former Network Rail worker George, 65, and secretary Mags, 64, enjoy bowling together in their free time.

Speaking about the win, George said: “It took a while to sink in.

“I knew my wife had already won before I did and, when she won, I went over and congratulated her and, when I won, she was the first one on the green to congratulate me.”

But George explained that he felt under no pressure to win after his wife’s victory.

He said: “I didn’t feel any pressure.

“We’ve both been at the club for a long time. I was just focussed on trying to win.

“This is the first time this has happened at the club – there was a father and daughter who both won in the past but never a husband and wife.

“Mags has won the ladies’ championship several times and I last won the men’s in 1994. I’ve been to the final three times in total but to do it together is special.”

And George clearly did not bow to pressure, as he won his final match 21-11, after Mags had secured a 21-4 victory in her club championship decider.

This year marks the eighth time she has won the tournament, her first title in 2005 when she was ladies’ president at the club.
