A FORMER teacher who taught at Dunbar Grammar School for nearly 25 years has praised the efforts of staff and pupils at the school.

Eight students from the secondary school picked up awards at Dunbar Community Council’s awards night recently.

Stephen Bunyan, who taught history at the school, was quick to highlight its continued success.

The former long-standing chairman of the group said: “Anybody that tells you something is wrong with Dunbar Grammar School, they are talking nonsense.

“It is a fine school, a good school, and certainly a place where staff are happy and dedicated.”

Awards were given to a team of fundraisers and the school’s basketball coaching team.

Abigail Sheridan, Eve Allan and Isla Henderson, from the school’s charity committee, were awarded a Young Citizen Team Award after raising more than £10,000 for a variety of good causes, including Children in Need and mental health charities.

Benji Salkeld, Alastair Zochowski, Sol Hampshire, Joel Carleton and Ewan Cowe received the same accolade, in recognition of their efforts to increase the number of youngsters playing basketball at the school.

Mr Bunyan – also a former member of East Lothian District Council – joined the school in 1966, when the school roll was about 500 pupils.
