IT WAS a pleasure to attend Drummohr Care Home in Wallyford on Friday for their summer celebration event as part of Care Home Open Week 2022. This was a fantastic afternoon and a great opportunity to showcase what our local care homes have to offer.
The open day was also an opportunity for those thinking of a career in care to see what facilities and opportunities were available locally. I know the Covid-19 pandemic was particularly hard on our care homes and the staff and I’m pleased to have been able to give my thanks to the home for all their work during the pandemic. A massive thank you to all the staff at Drummohr for the hard work put into this event and I do hope to be back again soon.
I have written previously about the importance of helping our environment and how every one of us has a role to play in keeping our local communities tidy. I joined Wallyford in Bloom on Saturday for a local litter pick and was pleased to see so many people in attendance to help out. Wallyford in Bloom meet monthly, with the next litter pick being Saturday, August 6. We are lucky to live in a country with some beautiful scenery and it is vital that we keep it that way.
Last week, the Scottish Parliament passed the Fireworks and Pyrotechnic Articles (Scotland) Bill. I very much welcome this Bill, which will introduce new legislation to control the sale and use of fireworks.
Every year, people suffer for firework-related injuries that could have been prevented and some animals suffer from great distress due to fireworks. This Bill introduces a fireworks licensing system, with mandatory safety training, for people wishing to purchase and use fireworks and gives powers for local authorities to designate firework control zones.
This is not a ban of fireworks but necessary legislation to ensure people can enjoy them safely – for example, at controlled public displays. It provides a great deal of protection for communities and challenges the anti-social use of fireworks and pyrotechnics.
