A PRIMARY school holding its first-ever May Fayre has raised more than £2,500.

Letham Mains Primary School first opened its doors at the beginning of last year.

However, the Covid-19 pandemic has limited the types of fundraiser that could be held.

Last month, the school was able to welcome parents, carers and pupils to its playground.

Bruce Murray, headteacher at the Haddington school, was delighted to say that the event had proven a great success.

He said: “I have run school fayres for 20 years and it is the most successful one I have ever seen.

“It was just lovely, on the back of what we have been through, to see the playground really busy and lots of amazing things happening.”

Among the attractions at the fayre were characters from Star Wars, including Chewbacca.

Mr Murray praised the school’s parent council for their help in organising the event, which was also attended by loose parts play project Tinkertown.

The pop-up play event gave children and families the time, space and freedom to design, build and play as they liked.

The experience was put on by East Lothian Play Association and The City of Play.

Mr Murray was pleased to say there was “lots of footfall” and that the event had raised £2,500 – with the figure still rising.

Among those in attendance were Haddington and Lammermuir ward councillor Shamin Akhtar and Martin Whitfield, South Scotland MSP.

Mr Whitfield, who was previously a teacher at Dirleton Primary School, said: “The children I met at Tinkertown were having so much fun designing, building and decorating their imaginative creations.

“It was clear they were having a blast and their enthusiasm for their projects was infectious.

“This kind of creative free play, where children can learn in an unstructured way, is hugely important to their development.

“I want to say a huge well done to all of the children who participated in Tinkertown, East Lothian Play Association and The City of Play for bringing the experience to Haddington, and the staff and pupils at Letham Mains for hosting it and making everyone so welcome.”
