A 14-year-old girl was approached by a man in a white van over the weekend, police have been told.

The youngster was walking along Hawthorn Road in Prestonpans when a white van pulled up alongside her and a man asked her to get into the vehicle.

The incident occurred at around 1.45pm on Saturday.

The girl's mum said in a statement: "My daughter was walking in Prestonpans today at around lunchtime to meet friends when a guy in a van stopped and said to her to get in.

"She told him no and ran away from the person.

"My daughter is 14-years-old but looks younger so please make your kids aware of the situation and to be extra careful when out and about."
