A YELLOW weather warning has been issued county-wide for thunderstorms this afternoon and this evening, as slow-moving rain showers and dark clouds fill the sky.

The thunderstorms are expected from as early as 1pm this afternoon and are set to continue until at least 8pm this evening.

The East Lothian coast, central Scotland and north-east England are set to be the most affected areas, with the Met office warning residents of potential disruption.

County residents have been warned about what conditions they can expect as a result of the thunderstorms with risks of localised flooding, strong winds and potential delays to public transport being noted.

The heavy rainfall could also result in additional road surface water and spray, causing difficult driving conditions.

The Met Office also noted online that “there is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds”.

There is also a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “Following the clearance of overnight rain, this area is likely to see the development of slow-moving showers and thunderstorms this afternoon.

“Although many places will miss the heaviest showers, a few places could see in excess of 30mm of rain in a couple of hours, possibly accompanied by lightning and hail, which would be enough to cause difficult driving conditions and localised surface water flooding.”
