A HADDINGTON man who assaulted his partner in an argument over money has been given a supervision order.

Steven McEwan seized the woman, for whom he is a carer, and repeatedly pulled at her during the row in July 2020.

McEwan, currently of Lammermuir Crescent, also pushed the woman on the chest, which was seen by a neighbour and the police were called in.

Officers arrived to find McEwan inside the property at West Loan in Prestonpans and he was arrested on domestic assault charges.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard that McEwan and the woman had been “abusing alcohol and drugs” and the assault took place in “a row over money”.

The pair were said to be “in a fairly bad place at the time” and McEwan was now seeking help for his addictions.

The court heard that the woman involved in the assault was “a reluctant witness” and had refused to give a statement to the police.

The court was also told that McEwan, 52, was the woman’s full-time carer and since the assault she had been “missing him”.

Following his arrest, McEwan appeared at court the following day and was released on bail conditions that he did not contact the woman or enter the street she lived in.

But McEwan breached the order on January 6 last year when he was found to have been in contact with her.

Last Thursday, Sheriff Robert Fife sentenced McEwan to be placed under the supervision of the social work department for the next 24 months.

McEwan pleaded guilty to assaulting the woman by seizing her by the bag, repeatedly pulling at her and pushing her on the body at an address at West Loan, Prestonpans, on July 28, 2020.

He also admitted breaching bail conditions by contacting the woman on January 6 last year.
