SHOCKED motorists contacted the police after spotting an elderly woman riding a mobility scooter on the wrong side of one of Scotland's busiest roads yesterday.

Drivers on the westbound carriageway of the A1, near Haddington, were in disbelief after witnessing the woman travelling towards them on Tuesday afternoon.

It is thought she had mistakenly joined an A1 exit slip road at the Abbotsview Junction and onto the path of oncoming traffic on the 70mph speed limit road.

The Courier was told that at least one motorist stopped to alert the lady of the danger she was in and posed to other road users.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland told the Courier: “Around 3.45pm on Tuesday, officers responded to a concern for person call after motorists contacted police to report a 72-year-old woman, was on a mobility scooter on the A1 near Haddington.

“Officers attended and the lady was removed from the road and provided with advice and assistance.”
