YOUNG gymnasts were jumping for joy after a superb showing at an elite competition in Newcastle on Sunday.

Meadowmill-based Saltire Team Gymnastics's youth mixed team competed in the English TeamGym Tournament and Championships.

Despite continued training disruptions during the Covid-19 pandemic, coach Erin Thomson said that the all-conquering team "displayed excellent gymnastics paired with top class team-spirit and determination".

She said: "A superb score secured the team a gold medal in both their main competition, the youth mixed category, and also as overall gold medallists for their age group in the ‘Home International’ event - a massive achievement against some fierce competition.

"With teams in attendance from across the UK, this display shows the team from Saltire are among the best in the country."

The competition was held at the City of Newcastle Gymnastics Academy.

The Scottish TeamGym Tournament and Championships take place in June, where the Saltire youngsters will aim to continue their 2022 TeamGym success.

TeamGym includes routines being performed on three pieces of apparatus: floor, trampette and a tumbling track.
