AN EAST Lothian opera singer tried her hand at love in a brand-new ITV musical dating show which aired over the weekend.

Ciara Harvie, from Longniddry, is a classical crossover singer and appeared on ITV’s Romeo and Duet when it was broadcast on television on Saturday.

The show follows single love-seekers standing on a balcony as they are serenaded by love matches that they can hear but not see.

Singers have just one song to entice the singleton down from the balcony; only then will the two meet – the couple will head on a date to learn a duet before returning to the stage to perform together.

Ciara has performed on TV before, taking to the stage for The Voice UK in 2017.

In the new show, former Preston Lodge High School pupil Ciara performed for contestant Michael, a physicist from Cambridge, who claimed his favourite book as a child was The Highway Code.

He added that he was on the hunt for an interesting person.

Before taking to the stage, Ciara said: “I think my voice will stand out because it is different to my speaking voice. I think the audience might be quite surprised.

“I love music so it’s quite important that a potential partner loves music as well.

“I would be hoping to see someone tall, dark and handsome – the usual!”

The 24-year-old performed What A Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong with a classical twist, but fell short of capturing the heart of Michael, who turned down her rendition.

Michael said: “She has a beautiful voice but I just don’t think our voices would go well together.”

Fans on Facebook rallied around the county girl, with one saying: “He’s a silly boy. On the upside, you got to perform on TV again and you met Oti [Mabuse, the show’s host].”

Another added: “He has no taste and does not appreciate how wonderful your voice is.”

A third comment read: “You could have won any of the TV competitions, they don’t know class when they hear it.”
