A HIGH school student recovering from cancer treatment returned to the rugby pitch last Saturday to watch a home fixture – a year on from when he last played as an U16 squad member.

Aidan Hogg, 16, of Musselburgh, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in March last year.

He spent most of 2021 bed-bound at Edinburgh’s Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (RHCYP).

Now, the teenager is finding his feet and returning to what he enjoys the most: his friends and sport.

A Preston Lodge RFC spokesperson said: “It was fantastic to have Aidan Hogg back on the grass at the Pennypit for our final home fixture with Hamilton Rugby Club.

“Aidan was training as an U16 squad member when diagnosed with leukaemia last year.

“Thank you for presenting the match ball to club captain Blair Robertson and a big thanks also to our mini mascot Archie from our P6 squad.”

Music was provided by members of Preston Lodge High School Pipe Band, while town food staple M&M Munchies of Prestonpans supplied food during the match.

The spokesperson continued: “Thanks to Michelle and a very well-managed PLRFC outside refreshment bar – thanks Lesley.”

Meanwhile, the rugby club also played host to its team’s Ladies Day 2020, two years after it was postponed.

An afternoon tea was enjoyed by all, with the spokesperson adding: “Great afternoon tea by Susan Ralston and a big shout out to Jennifer and her team who pulled everything together.

“As always, we are grateful to all our sponsors, supporters, players, coaches, backroom crew and volunteers.

“Without them, delivering rugby across the area would be very difficult.”
