A MAN assaulted a staff nurse at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh after he had been taken there for treatment.

Alexander Stewart punched nurse Paul Gildea on the body and struggled violently with him at the hospital’s accident and emergency department last month.

Stewart, of Preston Cross Cottages, Prestonpans, also shouted, swore and threw hospital equipment.

Stewart pleaded guilty to the two offences when he appeared from custody at Edinburgh Sheriff Court the day after the incident.

Sentence had been deferred to last Thursday for the preparation of background reports on Stewart but, when the case called, Sheriff Matthew Auchincloss was told the reports were not yet available.

The sheriff deferred sentence on 43-year-old Stewart for a second time to April 29.

Stewart admitted assaulting staff nurse Mr Gildea by punching him on the body, repeatedly attempting to punch him and struggling violently with him at the hospital on March 1, as well as behaving in a threatening or abusive manner by shouting, swearing and throwing hospital equipment on the same date.
