A FIELD on the outskirts of Elphinstone could be turned into a new housing development of 90 homes.

The 10-hectare site on the village’s western edge could be the site of 86 houses and four flats.

The proposed development, by Bellway Homes Scotland East, could also result in an expansion of Elphinstone Primary School.

Plans have been lodged with East Lothian Council.

Margo Macdonald, a member of Tranent and Elphinstone Community Council and the village’s community association, advised all those with thoughts on the proposals to get in touch with the local authority and share their views.

The site, off the village’s Main Street and to the east of the football ground, was previously identified as suitable for housing in East Lothian Council’s Local Development Plan.

Potential developers met with members of the public and held an exhibition in September 2016.

At that time, more than 100 people attended the public event and provided feedback on the proposals.

Now, a more detailed version of the plans has been put forward.

Drawings included in the application show that 21 three-bedroom homes and 46 four-bedroom homes would be created.

The site could also provide 23 affordable properties.

These would be a mix of two-bedroom cottage flats (four), two-bedroom mid terrace houses (nine), three-bedroom end terrace houses (eight), and four-bedroom end terrace houses (two).

A design and access statement has been included as part of the planning application, which could be determined by the beginning of July.

It outlines four “core objectives of the design”, including to “support a rich and pleasurable quality of life for inhabitants and visitors” and to “connect people and places by providing ease of movement within, and through developments”.

The proposals also include a drawing which identifies land to the east of the village’s primary school, which currently has a school roll of 56 and a further 16 in the nursery, for potential school expansion.

Discussions would take place between Bellway Homes Scotland East and East Lothian Council surrounding a section 75 agreement for any expansion and other potential improvements in the village.
